James QUINN and Ann SMITH
I'll start this QUINN tree with the QUINNs who came over from Ireland and settled in Leith, Edinburgh (in Smith's Land). According to various census returns, they appeared to live in close proximity with one another and had very large families.
The earliest of our line (proven by documentation) is James QUINN b.1850 in Ireland and died 6 Feb 1894 in Leith, Edinburgh. His parents were reported as Hugh QUINN and Mary Branigan (various spelling exists for Branigan). No documentation has been found for Hugh QUINN and Mary Branigan, other than their names on James' death certificate.
James QUINN married Ann SMITH in 1869
Marriage 1869 692/2 78
(Ann was very young at 18. She was born in 1851)
The children born to James QUINN and Ann SMITH were documented as:
Mary-Jane QUINN 1870-
Patrick QUINN 1872-1942
Rose-Ann QUINN 1874-
James QUINN 1877-1952
Ellen (Helen) QUINN 1878-
Margaret QUINN 1882-
Hugh QUINN 1883-1967
Bernard QUINN 1885-
Catherine QUINN 1891-
Our line is descended from Patrick QUINN and although his marriage, death and census records suggest he was the child of James and Ann, birth documentation has not been found to support this. He and his elder sister (Mary Jane QUINN) are often found on census returns living with their grandparents. It is possible that Patrick was the child of another QUINN sibling and he was brought into the QUINN/SMITH fold for some reason.
