BAILLIE

Much of the material on this blog was researched by Dr Thomas Baillie (Netherlands). He has documented the journey of the Baillie ancestry back to Thomas Baillie and Mary Wood in Ireland.  The BAILLIE stories are his (as he is descended from Thomas BAILLIE's 3rd marriage) and my research covers the descendants from the first marriage).

Robert Kerr BAILLIE (1869 - 1939) married Janet DAVIDSON (1871 - 1947) in 1891

and they had six children:

Alexander BAILLIE (1891-1969)
David BAILLIE (1895 - 1917)
Janet BAILLIE (1900 - 1989)
Mary Kerr BAILLIE (1905 - 1994)
Robert BAILLIE (1908 - 1998)
Thomas BAILLIE (1912 - 1979)

David BAILLIE was killed in the first world war in 1917 and is missing from the above photograph.  From back left, this photo shows Robert, Mary, Thomas, Janet and Alexander.  Front row is Janet (DAVIDSON) and Robert Kerr BAILLIE.

Map Reference - David BAILLIE - interred at Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery, Somme, France. (Also commemorated at Kaimshill Cemetery, Kilmarnock).

On the 1911 census, they are living at Burnpark Row, Riccarton.

On the 1901 census they are living at Caprington, Kilmarnock

Robert Kerr BAILLIE (1869-1939) was the son of Alexander Baillie (1844 - 1909)  and Mary Gibson KERR (1846 - 1911).

On the 1891 census they are living at 17 Burnpark Row, Riccarton (next door to Barbara Baillie and her husband Alexander TODD at number 16)

On the census of 1881, they are living at New Street, Riccarton

Alexander BAILLIE (1844 - 1909) was one of seven children born to Thomas BAILLIE (abt 1815 - 1881) and Barbara OLIPHANT (1813 - abt. 1852).  Barbara OLIPHANT was the first wife of Thomas BAILLIE (married 23rd Oct 1835 in Templepatrick, Antrim, Ireland).  Thomas subsequently had TWO other wives, so many BAILLIE descendants exist in various parts of the world. (See later BAILLIE stories provided by Dr Tom from the Netherlands).

Thomas BAILLIE appears on the 1851 census living at 13 Pollok Street, Pollokshaws with his first wife Barbara (Barbra) OLIPHANT and their children:

Andrew and Grace Lang are listed as lodgers.

Thomas BAILLIE appears on the 1861 census, living at 31 Low Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock with his second wife Janet and children Alexander, Adam and Barbara (from his first marriage to Barbara OLIPHANT).  His son John died in 1855.

By the 1871 census, Thomas is widowed again and is living at 75 Low Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock

On the 1881 census, Thomas is listed as a widower, living with his daughter Barbara (married to Alexander Todd) and family at 71 Low Glencairn Street, Kilmarnock.

Thomas BAILLIE's death certificate shows Thomas BAILLIE (1785 - 1859) as his father, mother Mary WOOD (1790 - 1859) - both from Antrim, Ireland.  This is the earliest proven documentary proof available at this present time.

Death was reported by his son, Adam from Campbell Street, Riccarton.
